Do You Really Need an Office to Succeed in Business?

The reigning perception around office space has been you need it to start a business. Obviously, with the rapid innovation of the internet, more and more entrepreneurs are convinced that brick and mortar storefronts are secondary concerns… at best.

But! If your company does begin generating revenue, and your employee base begins to grow, the need for an office can quickly become a legitimate concern. An office can serve as a barometer for productivity, and it can open up a path of communication within your team. Startups have about a 20% success rate, and according to, of those 20%, 90% have an actual physical office space.

You’ll find a lot of arguments out there against office space. I’ve heard all of the following at least once:

  • “We all just communicate via IM (slack, gchat, Skype, etc.) or email anyway; there’s no reason to be in the actual office.”
  • “I lose hours a day of productivity in my commute.”
  • “There’s too much overhead. We could devote office space rental to salaries and marketing”

And those are all valid arguments to some extent, there’s been a surge in the debate recently over whether startups need office space at all. Remote work sounds great on the surface, but there are intangibles to actual office space that drive higher success rates with business using office space.

The concept of a structured work space and room to house your staff shouldn’t be so quickly dismissed. Here are seven reasons entrepreneurs should consider an office when gearing up their business. And it doesn’t have to cost a fortune!

  1. Attract talent

A company’s office space can convey as sense of order and professionalism that an email or a online file transfer or CMS cannot.

Having a physical location for your business tells potential talent that you take your work seriously and you’re not a fly-by-night operation. Millennials may like the idea of working from home, but they’re less likely to buy in to an operation without a front door, or a place where they can go to validate their ideas.

They want to know that the space they’ll be working in is interesting and comfortable. They also want the assurance that their workplace will provide substantial networking opportunities, something very difficult to do when you’re working alone in front of computer.

  1. Team Building

Team building is not an exact science; but if done properly, it can result in an encouraging work environment. If you’re trying to construct a high-performance sales organization, or ensure product and marketing integration, you need a well-oiled machine when it comes to staff. They should feel supported by their coworkers and trust one another implicitly. And being around your coworkers on a daily basis for hours at a time are excellent ways to instill that trust and team work.

  1. Socialization

Socializing and team building go hand-in -hand. Co-workers more often than not become social outside of the work environment end up being friends, strengthening the concept of “team.” Improving your employees social life is a holistic perk that can’t be quantified but as an undeniable value.

  1. Accountability

Accountability issues a big deal, and their most prevalent with remote workers. You can IM someone all day and not get a response. Just because the icon next to their name is green and they appear to be available, doesn’t actually mean they’re in “work mode.” Working from home is rife with distractions.

If everyone physically shows up, people are a lot easier to get a hold of. Not to say your employees other endeavors aren’t important, but you don’t want to be paying them while they pursue those endeavors. An office can help there.

  1. Healthy Workers

Showing up at the office has intrinsic value, especially when comes to health. People are five times less likely to engage in unhealthy behavior, like smoking, alcohol abuse, and compulsive overeating when their piers frown upon those behaviors. Plus, it’s hard to smoke a pack of cigarettes at your desk when you’re in a non-smoking office.

Workplaces are increasingly developing exercise and wellness programs as well to show their employees they value good health. And good health has its benefits when it comes to selecting insurance plans.

  1. Investor Capital

Another great reason to consider office space is if your investors advise you to. More comments from hands-on investors will help you account for all the factors you need to consider before deciding whether or not to move operations to an office.

  1. Diversity Exposure

Variety is the spice of life, but it’s very easy to block ourselves into our own little digital universes, where everyone likes what we like and has the same interests as we do. It’s becoming increasingly evident that this kind of seclusion can breed backward thinking. Different opinions and viewpoints are almost always valuable in a professional environment where critical thought is valued, and it’s hard to get those dynamic ideas when you’re working in a bubble.
